The average person spends over an hour per day inside their vehicle. The air recirculated by most cabin HVAC systems is never cleaned, filtered for mold, or tested for contamination. Sections of vehicle materials — carpet, insulation, plastic paneling — are collected and analyzed for mold type and concentration. Bulk sampling is used to confirm or rule out active mold growth, differentiate discoloration from contamination, and compare affected and unaffected areas of the vehicle. Results are reported in colony forming units per gram of sample.
Settled dust is collected using a cassette and vacuum pump across approximately one square foot of surface. Because dust accumulates airborne spores over time, it provides a historical record of what has been present in the vehicle's air — not just a snapshot of current conditions. This makes dust sampling particularly valuable for detecting mold that was previously active but is no longer visible.
Tape lift and wipe samples are collected from interior surfaces. Tape lift samples distinguish active mold growth from settled spores. Wipe samples are cultured to identify both the genus and species of any mold present, giving a complete picture of contamination type and severity.
ERMI is the most advanced mold screening tool available — a DNA-based analysis that evaluates the likelihood and severity of mold contamination using mold-specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (MSQPCR).
